Portobello Road is one of London’s most famous markets and is best known for its vast array of antiques. Ranging from old spoons, cricket balls, teacups, lamps, jewelry, artwork – there is no end to what you will find at this ye olde market.
In addition to antiques, the market also has a large selection of vintage clothes and bric-a-brac, as well as fashion & jewelry, homeware and London souvenirs (like union jack tea pots, clocks, Big Ben statues and London postcards).
If you’re not into these new-fangled e-readers and you fancy turning actual pages in an “old school” book, Portobello’s selection of old and new books will certainly keep you entertained. In addition to books sold in the stalls, there are plenty of bookshops that line the street for marketers to browse.
Let’s not forget the kiddos – Portobello Road has plenty for our little market goers too. From children’s clothing to toys to backpacks and creative umbrellas, your little ones will find plenty to keep them entertained. But please keep an eye on them – this market does get quite busy!
Artwork and crafts are a prevalent part of Portobello market, as well. Buy a photograph from a local photographer or an old forgotten oil painting that uncovers the market’s history 150 years ago. Or perhaps, you prefer to create your own. With shops and stalls that specialise in selling fabrics, paints, vintage buttons, threads – all you artists, knitters & sewers out there will be able to stock up on supplies so that you can go home and create your own masterpiece.
And last, but certainly not least – the food. Whilst Portobello Road does not center on food, food is certainly not forgotten. The market has a wide range of food specialists who supply your usual market fare, such as fruits and vegetables, olives, cheeses & sausages, fish & other meats. You can also find hot food, like falafel, to eat then and there, as well as curries, crepes, paella, bratwurst, churros and more…
Happy shopping!
